Law Firm
A law firm is a legal business that is made up of one or more attorneys who will practice law in a given area. The purpose of this legal business is to provide the general public with legal advice and advocate for those who seek advice from any law firm. Most law firms will attempt to build long term relationships with their clients so that they can build a customer base that is retained over time. This way when a client utilizes the services of one lawyer at a given firm, if they are satisfied they will be more inclined to return to that same firm. Even if their requirement is for a different legal issue, many firms will have several different types of lawyers, who will cover any number of specialties within legal business.
A law firm can be owned by one individual lawyer or multiple lawyers. Law firms can cover any specialty within law, but they can only be run and owned by lawyers themselves. The reason for this is to prevent any special treatment or conflict of interest that may arise within the course of legal business that is conducted by the law firm itself.
Often a law firm will be made up of partners. Within any legal business, partners are considered joint owners, almost like a joint venture. They make decisions for the law firm together and any changes that are to be made must be agreed upon. A law firm that is made up of partners will also have what are known as associates. These individuals are just employees, also lawyers who will have to work their way up to partner. Partner does not always necessarily happen for all associates but it is a goal to set and something to aspire to for the associated within a law firm.
Legal business is not an easy task but for those lawyers who are hoping to develop and build a law firm of their own, there are several things you need to be aware of before entering this legal business. For example, there is a chance that if you partner with another lawyer they may end up forcing you out of your own law firm. The reason for this is because when you enter into this legal business you are becoming a joint owner. Over time, more associate lawyers within your law firm will become partners. Once there are more partners than were present at the start there is a chance that the existing partners could vote to kick one out. There are many reasons for this to happen at a law firm. One reason would be that a partner could potentially not be producing as well as the others.
Within any legal business positive results and producing consistent results is vital to success. A law firm with 4 partners and only 3 productive partners is suffering. It is costly to run any legal business so it is expected that cutbacks would be made in a law firm.
