A civil lawyer and a criminal lawyer bot go through the same type of education and follow a similar career path. They both attend four year schools and are required to obtain a license to practice law. Civil lawyers and criminal lawyers also are both provide legal service to the general public, but to whom they offer their services varies greatly.
A civil lawyer advocates for clients on private matters, such as a law suit between two parties. When a civil lawyer does this the case usually ends with the plaintiff getting compensated. However, for the party that loses in the suit, they are responsible to compensate the winner. For example, a civil lawyer will work on a case attempting to settle a divorce dispute or other property dispute.
On the other hand, a criminal lawyer deals with individuals who have committed criminal offenses and need to be punished. Criminal lawyers have to represent these individuals in a court of law through their trials and defend them. A criminal lawyer has to advocate for people who have broken the law and defend them until they are proven guilty by a court of law. Unlike civil lawyers, criminal lawyer’s client may be placed in jail as a punishment for their crimes. For civil lawyers, their clients will never be placed in jail. Civil law will only entail compensation for loss from one party to another.
A criminal lawyer should be consulted because they are skilled professionals who work in the best interest of their clients. Often clients will not seek out the help of a criminal lawyer because they feel that their questions and freedoms will be answered and protected by the government. A criminal lawyer will ensure that every detail is considered and that your rights are protected because they have your best interest in mind.
In contrast, a civil lawyer is one who will also protect the rights of their clients, but many civil disputes are settled out of court and the civil lawyer does not even have to go to court. The civil lawyer will often settle disputes by coming to a settlement agreement between the two parties involved and the other civil lawyer involved.
A civil lawyer and a criminal lawyer do not deal with the same type of clients or the same type of laws but they are however still advocating for the clients in the same manner. Whether you are a civil or criminal lawyer you should be presenting the best case possible for your client and always consider their best interest. For criminal lawyers especially, the pressure is high because the client relies on you to defend them and protect their freedom. Since criminal law is punishable by incarceration, or jail time, a criminal lawyer must do everything in his or her power to prevent this from happening. If any punishment is determined, a criminal lawyer should still be advocating to lower his or her client’s sentence.
